RECENTLY finished reading X-men: THE DARK PHOENIX SAGA, said to be one of the best and important comics in history... it was a good read, but it didn't fit my taste so much, maybe because it was an 1986 comic or 1984 and the way the stories were written back then, i don't know, but the art was great, and it had a great ending, and some great plots. anyway, it awakened my lost love of x-men, the series are really great, very different from the comics out there, it deals with every aspect of humanity unlike many other comics, that's why i love them, maybe i start following x-men after many years, drew this 5 minute sketch of the black queen and decided to give it some color. enjoy suckers.

مدتی را میگذرد که بو حجت مصور را ز یارانش غافل از خبر است.
خبر از پیک رسید که بو نصر مورخ را بلایی مبتلا شده.
روزی بو حجت مصور در حال قبیحه نگاری گلنازه خاتون همسایه بود که مطلع گردیده که بونصر مورخ را پایش در بستر ماله سازه است.
به تشخیص طبیب او را 93 روز در بستر خوابانیده –وی ز درد گزافی که بالینش را همراهی میکند دست از قلم برداشته.
ازرده خاطر گشته و زبان به شکوه اورده که عدالت الهی را با وی همجوار نگردیده.
بستر را قادر به ترک نبوده حال انکه بو هاشم و بو والای مطرب در سیاهت و ضیافت به سر میبرند.
خبر رسیده که دست به خنجر گردیده – گیسوان و محاسن به مراد اشفتگی ز ریشه تراشیده.
مصور را بدان واداشت که بیندیشد گویا بو نصر را جنون فرا گرفته و همانا باید وی را نصراله مجنون افریجه پا نامید که گلنازه خاتون اطمینان داده که خلقیاتش معمول و مجنون نگشته.
بو حجت را غذب برداشته- خم به ابرو اورده- صور قبیحه گلنازه خاتون را از هم دریده و وی را مرخص به منزل کرده.
به اندیشه فرو رفته- پس برین شد که رساله ای قلم کند و از احوالات یارش مطلع گردد.

ok so i'm bored, all the websites are filtered and everyone else has gone on a vacation or something, so i'm stock in my house doing nothing.
no classes yet folks, and the friends left are just i don't know... i'm not having fun to be honest.
i pretend that i'm having fun but i'm not, i'm just passing time with them.
milad's gone to driving classes, atlaast.
i guess i have to go for a few sessions too.
i went out with Pariya a week back, had fastfood, then headed to a cafe and had some lemonade and icecream. drew some shit and wasted the rest of the day walking.
and we met yesterday again... i don't know why, it was one of those shitty meetings that i had once with hamed, meeting each other for one hour doing nothing and then leave for home. yes this time, we wasted our time again walking towardS home, at least we went to a toyshop and i bought some nostalgic small turtle toys.
and that's that to it.
then we have golnaz which is alone alot these days, and she's asking me if i can go to her house cuz she's lonely and our houses are on the opposite blocks... i'm eventually gonna get laid one of these days. i tell you.

the only workout i get is cleaning the house once a week or every two weeks, at least i'm drawing a bit more now, decideD to participate in international industrial design contests, and the good ones were finished already, so now i have a moon city, plush toys and some other stuff, the only useful contest was the robot design for 2020, i'm gonna work on that, i'm also working on a portable restaurant, at first it was a normal thing now i'm deciding to make it a robot, cuz i'm crazy for robots.
reading a blog today, some literaturistic guy writing about his everyday life, quiet unusual way of using a formal language for everyday life, and he was talking about getting drunk kissing the girl and stuff like that... it was ridicules. but i think it felt good, i stopped reading in the middle the way he uses the words are boring, so that's that.
ok i'm bored with this blog, i have no special thing to write.
other than i was this close to start a relation with someone recently but i'm happy i didn't, it would suck, and also, it's been one long horny week, i don't know what's wrong with me.... i need to have sex A.S.A.P. HORMONE EXPLOSION BABYYY, YEAAAH!!!

ah yes, atlast, the goddamn blogger let me upload my works... so here we got some Arian characters, as you can see the final design for Vox is done now, and there you have Cancer, the guy we were suppose to cancel but i just kept drawing the freak until i was intrested inhim, and lastly we have ZEUS the big bad leader or something, we don't know if he's the boss yet.
but it looks like it, he used to be a kickass super hero, and now from old age he's given up the suit and goes around more formal... not satysfied with the look though, i'm still working on the man.

The only true super hero i've seen in iran, actually he goes waaay back to my childhood, there was this comedy tv show which had 10 or something short episodes in it, and it was aired nightly. one of the episodes was this clumsy looking superhero, it was funny but i still don't undrestand why it stayed with me after so long, so here's for hovakhshatareh.

amazing... a few years back when i was a highschool student, a close friend of mine. JAMAL SAKKAK sang this song for me, that time i didn't undrestand what he was saying and told him it sucked and slipknot rules...so simple of me, i'd never heard that song. years passed and a few days ago i asked my dear friend NAZANIN to bring me everything she's got from SIAVASH GHOMEYSHI, in years i've come to apriciate this musician and respect him, he is flawless. and last day she gave them to me, at night i put them all in my i-pod, and there it was: az mast ke bar mast, the most curious song i had been after for so long.
it was finally there, i played it, and it almost brought tears to my eyes, the lyrics the music, Siavash's voice, it's so perfect that the hair stands on back of my neck everytime i listen to it, and my skin crawls, it's beautiful and so sad. this is probably the truest and one of the best songs i've heard in my whole life.
i apriciate to know this man andlisten to his music. may god bless him.

i don't like writing shit load of crap, i don't feel like it, or maybe i'm too busy or the shit has been so much that i can't even explain it... but the actions of one indivdual back in my deviantart page provoked enough anger in me to start writing again...
i've been living in this country for 21 years, that's all my life with the exeption of a year and in these years i've come to fully undrestand the nature of the people who are citizens of the country known as Iran.
i've lived and ate and did everything with these people...
before i go on, i would like to indicate that i'm not a hollier than though and a knowitall kind of a guy and i don't mean to be although i act like it most of the time but i think i know enough what i'm seeing and talking about.

i don't know if it's our colture or our nation, or the new way of thinking that iranian people have that they think they are so great and stand atop of everything else and everyone else and they are simply god... well guess what? you are all a bunch of dillusional fools who can't tell A dildo from a dick!!!
i mean come on!
now i'm not judging the past generations, they are certainly much better than we are, and i've not lived their lives and haven't been in their time, but the new generation? THEY ARE HARDCORE! it's a sheer stupidity amoung us youth of a nation.
we ignore each other, double cross each other, and when others complain we turn aroung and defend our action and insult them or just try to ignore it.

we are so selfish that we destroy ones dignity and spread the insult and the news to people we don't even know, yes! we go that far... same case that i had today.
it's the nature of the new iranian generation to fuckup everything they see, they destroy it to the zero, it's unbelieveble, i mean goddamn, unicron and galactus devour worlds for their hunger and thier nature, hell galactus would spare a few planets by hiring heralds... but these socalled artists and cool network generation of ours? they are worse than nuclear bombs, they're lepear disease they eat to the bone and then leave nothing. i can't believe how many social networks we've destroyed simply because of our actions, first we went on and made yahoo messanger an official whore house showing our cocks with webcams and looking for whoreS, and doing pranks ON people, then we fucked yahoo360... the last days as i recall you could find hookers with their numbers in'em, then came the amazing facebook which in a matter of weeks we dominated it and the worse is yet to come, so were other social networks which thankfuly i'm not a member in...
and now deviantart...it;s not a social network... i don't call it that, it's a place for artists to show their work, and yet, these fools get confused and spread their desease over it, i'm happy that the iranian community is very small in this website and i hope it stays this way, they're not artists, they are a bunch of lowclass uneducated crap as brains.
i'm not going to talk about their works and socalled what they call art and their group of dumb wannabes, (seriously! the former of the group doesn't know english and yet he speaks of the great iranian art and that he wants to show persian art to the world... well STUPID if they can't read what you're saying they're most likly to ignore you, specially with your selected works from different artists in our group which are all date papers in farsi).
i'm having a headache so i won't be writng more,
the funny thing is when i say you iranianS destroy EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH they go: don't act like you're a foreigner... well, i'm no Iranian, that's not what my birth certificate says, i've had the privilage of being born in another country, my parents are iranian and so are my whole family and i have nothing against them, i've been an isolated kid, after going to university i had the chance to know many different people, specially those in the fields of art, but all the general public too due to the nature of my major... i have many friends, but i'm sad to say amoung the people i know my age... there are only a handfull of them which think right and have a purpose in life and what they want to be...
as for me? well, i consider myself almost iranian... that's what you get when you live here for 21 years... but the western methods suits me just fine, i rather think about superheroes and the new transformer toys like the stupid retard americans rather than worry about the name of a gulf weather it's persian or arabian...
they praise thier ancient persian personality like they are bowing next to god, yet they know nothing of it, they just babble about it, talk is what we iranians are good at... since varg has been released from prison (BURZUM) I'VE BEEN following his story making a psychology of the guy... there's a difference between when he talks about ancient and folk of norway and the roots of his country and his racism and anti american slogans and the stupid stuff that our youth fakers try to say about their land... atleast the guy has studied the stuff and knows what he's talking about. do i praise western colture? ofcourse, mostly, because it has given me more stuff in a few years than what Iran has given me in a whole life, is there hope for the future iran? honestly? NOT WITH THESE PEOPLE AROUND.
every one has their own belief and view on things and i totally respect that. but when it's stepped over the line without education i can't help but to express my disapointment... thanks to that guy, who opened my eyes once more so i could see what mudpit i'm stuck into...

here are some sketches i did, from the bottom, these are the final sketches done in our last place, in A5 papers which were handy enough in those days, we have the saddened man doing his everyday fishing for the dead men's souls in the happy sad sky!!! ok that's done recently by hamed in our new place since he was bored of listening to radio and me drawing other stuff.
then we have this girl having visions of a tentacle monstrocity or something like that, titled: i can't take it anymore!
then i went for a galactus type of character but it ended up being shit, and here you have it, it's a basic design for one of my characters.
hal jordan, green lantern doing what he does best, i actually like this one, tried to the cartoon style, and used the most shit color pencils ever existing.
these 3 were done in one night.
and here is a recent take on the new TORN, which is basically my character but hamed made a big chage to the guy in his own comics, and called it THE NEW TORN, i was going for a shinubi kind of robot, but when hamed came to stay that night i was like,dude that's totaly the new torn or a grandfather of his generation. so there you have it, the boring stories of our drawings.

some say i'm a rip-off, some say i'm a genious, some say i'm a copy machine, some say i steak ideas... but...I... AM... GALVATROOOON!
and i'm going to review the musics i have in my NOKIA N73 because i lost my i-pod a few months back, but since i'm a keyboard fanatic i shall write as much as i can in my reviews... or some shit like that, and i shall include album covers so you know that my blog is more cool than hamed's ...er er er! am i eviiiillll? yes i am...

no this is not the fuckin best of the year review, but some albums are included.

AS I LAY DYING: SHADOWS ARE SECURITY= well, to tell the truth i passed this album long time ago, thinking it was shit, it was AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE which brough me back to this band since this was it's main singer's band, i have not listened to anyother AILD albums yet, but i can tell that shadows are security is great album and i'm ashamed of letting it go. it was ranked in my best of the year list. the riffs are great, the vocals are harsh, the music is kick ass, this is the album you must listen to if you are a metal head, surely didn't expect this from a hardcore christian metal band. 90/100

ALICE IN CHAINS: BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE= it's no surprise, and it's been almost true on a lot of bands, when their main soul is taken from them, when they return with a new member, specially as vocal, everuthing about the music turns to suck! same happened to drowning pool, mayhem, nightwish and many other bands, how ever, alice in chains comes as a rare gem, the band everyone thought would never return after it;s singer's death came back after many years with a bang, a new vocals, and goddamn they didn't disapoing anyone, the new singer sounds somehow like the old one, the vocals so close that you mistake his voice with the original vocals in some songs, the song writing and the music is just plain awesome, the opening title, all secrets known starts with an epic comeback, giving nod to a new era for the band by the first sentences: hello! a new begining... then comes check my brain a catchysong with a happier mood, your decision takes the ol' acoustic style back to what the band used to be good in, acid bubble is a strong song with highs and lows, leason learned and others... this album truley proves that grunge is not dead atall, alice in chains was probably any metal fan's favorite album of the year and years to come. 100/100

AVRIL LAVIGNE: LET GO= yup, old one, avril's first album, the whole punk bad ass girl era, i respect avril and i adore her, i love her with my heart, listening to this album, i could relate to it very much, catchy and great songs, all with their own fun, and full of feelings blown into them, ask me i say she deserves any award that she won for this album, and she deserves the fame she has today, i was a kid when i heard this album and complicated and sk8er boy were my fave tracks, but revisiting it again, these are the lesser intresting tracks of the album, and i came to a conclusion that avril used to sing much better in her earlier albums, i haven't listened to other albums as much as this one, but in let go she sounds more mature and more strong, in the other albums she sounds more like a teen girl singing, not that it's bad, i loved those albums aswell,from the strong opening track that brings her disapointment and sadness for a lost love to the hit songs that made her the pop queen she is, to the mellow and joyfull songs ahead of them, this is a great album to relax with and clear you mind for some time, and relate to when you're feeling down. 95/100

DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT: ADDICTED= many praised this album and almost all metal bloggers ranked this album as their album of the year, i wasn't that intrested in the album at first, listening to it over and over, i realized the magic inside, we all know the genious devin townsend is in music and he doesn't disapoint, this is somewhat a pop version project of his, unlike his chaotic ocean machine and strapping young lad songs and the mellow kee project. with an additional female vocals this album kicks ass, sadly it might move down to the last titles of the year's list, but a great album all in all and great to listen to. killer tracks: addicted- universe in a ball- bend it like a bender- resolve- ee ah!- hyper drive- ... fuck, all of it (lol) 94/100

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACK HEARTS: UP YOUR ALLEY= YUP the album every one used to talk about back then, joan jett the god mother of punk rock! well judging it for it's own time it seems that yeah, it was kick ass for the 80s and early 90s, but now, it's just a plain normal rock music mostly crap, but thanks to it's awesome hits that saves the album and make it memoriable and good enough to listen to, such as the opening track I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU, RIDING WITH JAMES DEAN, it certainly isn't as good as I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL album, but it's an allright listen from time to time, but the first 2 songs are an everyday listen, gotta love joanjett for such classics...70/100

MARYLIN MANSON: THE HIGH END OF LOW= well isn't it the god of fuck himself, many were disapointed with this album, and i guess they had their point, but come on, i don't know what manson was thinking, after the shit he gave out named EAT ME DRINK ME, i lost all hope for this man, it was so shit that i couldn't listen more than 2 tracks, it was shit itself, the true fuck of life, the shit that they give you in pizza juju instead of pizza, the piss of pig mixed with fart going through your vains... i believe he undrestood his mistake and tried to correct it by this album, how ever, he has failed mostly, but since i'm a wierdo and always disagree i say this album is actually good, it's like a comeback, like all other major bands such as metallica, NIN, megadeth and ... he's tried to get back to the roots of his music, the first albums, this one reminds me of A PORTRAIT OF AMERICAN FAMILY, mixed with MECHANICAL ANIMALS, and THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE all together in a bowl, the album is equally separated to strange, hard and soft songs, mostly strange, but the soft songs have their shining moment aswell, though the hardcore songs fail to amaze anyone, most of the songs are repitative and the listener gets bored with'em, it's like the dead manson hype is all gone and he's forced to sing. musically? the album is awesome, with the return of the old guitarist TWIGGY RAMIREZ after his departure from NIN , you can clearly see the amazing industrial techniques that he's brough with him as a suveniere, and maybe that's why the album sounds familiar, generaly? all in all it's an ok album, for an industrial metaller like me who hardly gets any good industrials it's an ok album and listenable, but it's like manson has lost the torch he once carried, sadly it has lost it's hype and shock and failed more fans. 85/100

MUDWAYNE: MUDWAYNE= well they made their debut album after all, i always thought og mudwayne as a shitty band, nothing about them was right for me, not the music, not the crappy makeups, not the songs , not the video clips, everything was wrong about them apart from DIG! track, i always thought the singer just tried so hard to be brutal and he always failed, until HIDE AND SEEK album came out, which got me just a tiny bit intrested in them for some of the tracks but i soon forgot about them, leaving them in limbo, this year hamed informed me of their new album, i hesitantly dled it and BOOM! IT WAS GREAT! i mean i never expected that from mudwayne, the album started with this coping machine type sound and i was like:" crap, here we go again, same shitty typical mudwayne tracks with reversed talkings and strange sounds like LD50" and then there was silence, then the machine started working again and faded away and suddeny a legion of massive hard bits and riffs blew my mind and made my ears bleed, i was constantly heading and smiling for it's brutality, mudwayne has clearly made a new statement with their debut album and they have failed to make a shitty album for a debut, this by far the best album the band has released, and the first time i've noticed that the guy is not trying so hard. from the riffs to the music, heard it all before, scream with me, beautiful and strange, dead inside, it's a full of mixed joy for your ears, so put the headphone on and bang your shit.

yo,so yeah, it's been a long time, but i've been busy, so let's review this year in a sentence, this year as awesome as it was it was really fucked up too, so many things happened, so many stuff happened that changed my life and made me growup even more. i don't know but personally it was a good year for me, with all it's shitty incidents.

worst incident of the year: my parent's divorce

best outcome of the worst incident: getting free of military service and having less stress in my life.

most stressful incident of the year: loosing the house and looking for the house.

friends that i lost: shirin and maryam, navid, i'm not sad, it's for the better.

new friends: farshad, hana, nastaran

best incident of the year: my party

strange shit of the year: i met saba after 4 years... she freaked the fuck out of me, scary bitch! lol!

worst person of the year: probably my uncle for what he did during the house transision.

best person of the year: uh...

worst friend of the year: probably maryam, she of all could have made things allright but she ended up being a bitch to everyone and lost a good friend.

best friend of the year: that would go for Hana, i always thought she was kind of cool but it wasn't until the projects that we made a team and there i found how awesome and great she is, she is great.

love of the year: SAHAR MALEKPOUR , yeah i fell in love this year.

worst teacher of the year: mr.azar kheil for technical design, or should we say mechanics, i hate that course, but i didn't enjoy mr.samet's companion ship either.

best teacher: mr. nouri for our project 3 (ergonomic design) a true master, a great man and super cool and funny with all his seriousness.

friend surpise?: 1.FARSHAD! i never ever thought we would getalong so well together and evetually end up being great friends and colleages. he's awesome and i'm proud to have him by my side.
2. Pariya, she's changed so much since the first days, no more the ice queen, i'm starting to feel a great bond of friendship between us, afterall, she's my comic partner.

best party of the year: mine :D

worst party of the year: lida's birthday, it was just so ... lame.

oh yeah, let's not forget WATCHMEN, 3 HOURS OF NONESTOP PANEL TO PANEL ADAPTATION, PLESURE FOR THE MIND AND EYE :D SAW THE BLUERAY IN HOME THEATRE, IT WAS GREAT GREAT GREAT, YOU SHOULDN'T MISS THIS MOVIE.

worst movie of the year: SPIRIT, comeon frankmiller,you sang your endgame in comics with ASBAR, please don't make movies.

favorite documentary: GLOBAL METAL. probably one of the best documentaries ever.

favorite album: well this year was the year of great music, so it'll have it's own post but #1 of the all was THERAPY? TROUBLEGUM
i can't say how much this album helped me... it actually helped me in many of my dark hours. it had plesure, pain and nager alltogether, great album, probably the best album of my life too.

worst album of the year: uh... i can't remember too many music this year, but i'll go with W.A.S.P.: babylon

best soundtrack: command and conquer red alert 2 game.

ok, so i've been absoloutly busy on my university projects which i adore, i also did others works besides mine too :D . the designs you see below are still for jack and the beanstalk project, these were sahba and golnaz' designs wich i did for them, they got 17/5, the sprays and perfumes are our next project, the task is to combine to brands together and design a perfume bottle which represents them... um i didn't get the task very good so i just designed these first sketches as a test, our teacher actually liked it, but she and i decided on working on a pepsi perfume i had designed, combining it with something else, sandis it would be i guess, i don't know what yet. it's gonna be a really fun ride...oh i'm gonna make my own new industrial design blog i guess. to separat my comics from IDs... guess it'll work better.

the psychology of batman part1.

who the hell is the batman?
many people like this guy since he has no powers, only cool toys to play with.
many love this guy because they believe a guy like batman can exist...
well go screw yourself cuz batman is just as fiction as super man, it's an impossible character.
no one can ever be like batman, even if you're the richest man in the world. as far as i'm concerned the strongest and most trained guys with the highest fighting abilities are NAVY SEALS, or marine corp special forces. this guys is stronger than them, and he has a brain of an alien that can solve anything just like sherlock holmes, also add a lot of ninja martial arts training and yoga, and GOD! every trainng there is in the world, this guy knows it, he also is a good chemist.
yes my friends, the sad truth is...this is impossible, no one can ever be batman.
last month 2 teenage boys in the U.S, who were very good at martial arts and ninja trainings got busted, what were they doing? they were in their car wearing masks, following drugdealers to punish them and bring them to justice... oops! the cops got them before they could even find a dealer, and guess who went to jail? the two 19 year old kids.
but atleast, in the middle of all these great super powered heroes, batman is human, and that's something we should be proud of, can the reader relate to this guy?
well, hardly, i personally can relate more to superman than batman. it's almost like after 60 years we still don't know the guy completely, he's rich, famous, playboy, caring... but that's all we know... right? i can't see anything that makes me want to relate to this guy, he has no life problems as far as i'm concerned, a guilt over jason's death (former robin) which is now over since he's back, what else?... I DON'T KNOW! atleast tony stark is an alcoholic.
don't get me wrong here. i love batman, he's the best,i still buy his comics and i'm eager to know what happens with him every month, he's the first toy i buy after transformers and mcfarlanes. and he's still the first cartoon i grab my hands on.and number one in my movie list.
i'm simply trying to carve something up for me. i wanna know the guy. maybe it's true, event the fictional characters in his comics have undrestood this. that BRUCE WAYNE doesn't exist... it's just a mask, the real person is batman, a vengence driven psycho that only undrestands justice. nothing is more important for him than his friends, the rest he'll just deal with it according to his justice. only when his friends get hurt we see the true nature of his sadness. or should i change it and say he shows more emotions when it comes to his family,
robin, nightwing, barbara, james gordon, alfred, these are his family, the socalled supporting characters, which eventually do have a back ground and emotions and i don't know, something to relate to unlike our main hero.
so really... who is batman?
this blog will be continued in episode 2, as i dig more into this character's psychology.
in other words, i'm just a fan who might be wrong, but i'm giving my perspective.

FUNNY BOOKS

They breezed in one Sunday afternoon, wide eyed and cheerful. Both must have been in their late 70s or early 80s. I watched as they casually walked the floor, browsing and whispering to one another. The one thing that immediately struck me was that they were holding each other's hands. I remember thinking about how lucky it must be to get to that stage of life and not only be with someone you love, but also want to hold their hand.
She wore a crazy purple hat, with a wide brim. It would have looked silly on a younger woman, but somehow, it suited her just fine. He wore beat up jeans and a button-up shirt. Not tucked in. Loose and wrinkled. She dropped her bag and he bent to pick it up. He handed it to her and she gave him a sweet little kiss on the cheek. Again, I thought, "lucky."
They made their way into the kids section and stopped short at the spinner rack. We've always kept an old fashioned spinner rack in the window, stuffed with all manner of kids comics. We keep it all mixed up so the kids have to hunt for what they're looking for. "The hunt" is what's missing these days.
She spun it around and laughed the whole time. He watched her and lit up right along. After awhile, they came to the counter and plopped down a stack of comics. "Archie," "Betty & Veronica," "Jughead."
"Did you find everything you were looking for?" I asked.
"I wasn't really looking for anything," she said, "but I sure found something. I wasn't aware they still made these!"
"Why wouldn't they?" I said.
She paused for a moment, then threw her head back and laughed. It was a hearty laugh that didn't befit her age. If you closed your eyes, you'd think she was a woman in her 20's.
"Are you the owner?" she asked.
"I sure am."

We exchanged pleasantries. Her name was Rose. His was Ben. They lived just a few blocks away and had done for the last 20 years. They took the same walk up and down the boulevard every Sunday for most of those 20 years and were surprised to see a new store open in our location, much less a comic book store. I welcomed them to the shop and they welcomed me to the neighborhood.
They came every Sunday like clockwork. Same time every week. Same youthful exuberance. Rose wore a new hat, each one more colorful than the last. Red to suit her name, yellow, green, pink, lavender. Ben wore his usual jeans and sneakers. Sprightly and tough for a guy his age.
Every week, they made their way to the kid's section, raiding my spinner rack for everything "Archie."
The conversation was always wonderful. They'd just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. 50 years! They met during the Golden Age. What a time that must have been. She spoke of comics back then and we quipped about the usual fortunes everyone would have made had they all kept their comics instead of tossing them away like newspapers.
Ben said,"Back then, we called them "funny books." We rolled them up and stuck them in our back pockets. It was a different time. We didn't know about how to collect things and take care of them. I mean really take care of them. When you're that age, you don't think about the future and what things will be worth. You've got all the time in the world to figure that out."
I replied, "But, you sure did have a lot of fun reading them, didn't you? Having fun is all that counts in the world of comics."
Again, Rose's laughter filled the shop. I began to realize that Ben only laughed when she did. When she looked forlorn (which was a rare event), his mood followed. He shadowed her, physically and emotionally.

All I could think about was how lucky their grandchildren were to have these two spry old folks pelting them with Archie Comics every week. It made me want to call my grandmother. So, I did.
We started placing large reorders of Archies. Heck, we'd never ordered that many before. But, Rose was eating them up on a weekly basis and I had to keep up with her. I suspect Ben had the same problem.
They came in on Sunday, as usual. Only, this time they came a bit later in the day than their normal visit. And, the mood was altogether different.
Rose still wore her signature bright and outrageous hat. Ben still looked beat up and worn out. But, I noticed his hand on her arm. I noticed how she seemed to be almost leaning on him. We exchanged our "hellos!" and "how are yas!" and they took up their place where the comic books spin. They stood there for a long, long time. Long enough to make me wonder.
They came to the register and Rose set down her usual booty. I stared at her and made no move to ring her up or make polite conversation. It was rude and presumptuous, but I did it anyway.
She knew right away what I was thinking and winked at me. There's something wonderful about being on the receiving end of a wink from a colorful old woman. Makes you feel like your entire life has been lived correctly. Like you made the right choices and she's the only one who knows.
She reached up and gently pulled the hat from her head, letting it slide onto the counter.
The tufts of hair were few and far between. The rest was bald, and not by choice. The Cancer was doing its work and doing it well.
"Oh, Rose. I'm so sorry. If there's anything I can do, please let me know." I said sheepishly.
Rose put her hand on mine and said, "Sweetie, you're already doing it. Now ring me up for these "Betty & Veronicas"! I need to get home and see who wins this time!"
The following week, Rose seemed a thousand times better. She was bright and chipper and wore a rainbow colored scarf instead of her signature hat. Ben, however, wore a brand new baseball hat. It was out of character and oddly humorous.

They brought their books to the counter and I began to ring them up.
"How you feeling today, Rose?" I asked.
"Feeling great! How about you?" she replied.
"Not bad for a Sunday. How you doing, Ben?" I said.
Ben took his hat off and smiled. "Bald," he said. "Damn bald!"
Eighty years old and he'd shaved his head in solidarity. This was dedication on a grand scale. This was bravery beyond borders. This was love.
Six weeks passed. The Archies piled up.
Ben came in alone one Sunday. He wore no hat and made no pretense of his bald pate. I unashamedly left the customers I was helping to greet him.
"Hey Ben. How's Rose doing?" I asked.
He replied, "Not so good, kiddo. She took a turn and couldn't shake it this time. She's tough, though. She'll fight it off."
He didn't seem to want to talk about it anymore, so I didn't push. He grabbed all that he could from the spinner and brought it to the counter.
"Do you have any more?" he asked.
"Sure" I said. "How many more issues do you need?"
"Every one you've got" He said.
I realized then that I had no idea what their lives were about. That I had no place in imagining I knew these people and what their life was like outside of my doors. The "Archies" and "Betty & Vernonicas" and "Jugheads" that she piled up on the counter weren't for her grandchildren at all. Hell, they'd be grown by now. They were for her.
It's not the cover that counts. It's the stories inside.

Ben told me they were the only things she could focus on. That besides their Sunday walks, she hadn't really gone out in almost a year. That during the times of the most savage pain, she held the comics in her hands because they comforted her. He told me that he read to her at night from them. From Archie Digests! A bald old man, acting out all of the roles and finishing every punch-line. I can only imagine how much joy that gave her amid her anguish.
He cried a little at the counter until he realized people were looking.
"Just ring me up." He said.
"Not today, Ben." I said. I bagged all of the books up and passed my hand over the register. "Today, they're on me."
He shook my hand hard, thanked me and he left.
I never saw either of them again.
Lots of things happen inside a comic book store. Especially a small one. You get to see more and you get to see it up close and personal. People come in and you become immersed inside their lives. Or, at least what little you really know of them. It's all a moment in time. As if they bring in pieces of the outside world, but not all of it. The rest is manufactured and made real by the time you ring them up. If you pay attention to people, you see all of their truths. All of their strengths and weaknesses. Or, you go blind and they become whatever you imagine them to be.
I imagined Rose holding out for awhile longer, then passing peacefully away. I imagined Ben tying up loose ends, then joining her not long after. I imagined their family going through boxes of their things. A lifetime of personal treasures. Treasures "collected." Treasures "taken care of."
And, at the bottom of one, a tremendous stack of "Archies" and "Betty & Veronicas" and "Jugheads." All well read and enjoyed. All filled with memories of a Golden Age when they were both young and scared and had all the time in the world.
